December 31, 2004
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Julius Axelrod, Ph.D. one of the great neuroscientists of the 20th century, and a distinguished member of the Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute Scientific Advisory Board passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2004 at his home in Rockville, Md. He was 92..
"Brilliant thinker and devoted investigator of the maladies of the mind, Dr. Axelrod was always able to bridge the gap between molecular events in the brain and the cognitive functions and dysfunctions of the human mind," said Dr. Daniel L. Alkon, Scientific Director for BRNI. "His life work included discovering fundamental synaptic mechanisms that help explain how drugs can work to alleviate the dreadful symptoms of depression."
In 1970 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Dr. Bernard Katz of Britain and Prof. Ulf von Euler of Sweden. Dr. Axelrod always considered his research as a personal mission that might bring practical solutions to people. "In this way, he and his pioneering neuroscience served and will continue to serve as an inspiration for our work at BRNI, now and for future generations," noted Dr. Alkon..
