Welcome
The Blanchette Rockefeller Neurosciences Institute (BRNI) has always seen as its mission, understanding and addressing the broad sweep of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and the human and financial toll it takes on our families. From leading edge basic research aimed at diagnosing the disease at an early stage, to new treatments and ultimately a cure, the Institute is making great progress, Similarly, part of the Institute’s mission has also been to educate those who are the front lines in the battle to treat patients and inform care givers so they might make the journey through the darkness of this disease a little easier and more human.
With AD, it is the entire universe of health care providers and social services that must be better deployed and more effectively integrated in order to help. Many doctors are not fully equipped to understand the early signs of the disease. Most need and want to understand better the latest in treatment and pharmaceuticals. Few providers are as informed as they should be to ‘treat’ the families and care givers – to help them through the ravages of the disease.
The Alzheimer’s Outreach and Registry Program is a unique, unprecedented and powerful partnership focused on Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis, treatment and the outreach to both physicians and caregivers.
This partnership has brought together BRNI, the West Virginia Medical Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter, and the West Virginia Bureau of Senior Services to help patients and their families through the long darkness of this disease.
The program has three components:
A continuing medical education course to keep physicians informed and proactive in latest diagnostic techniques and treatments;
A second continuing medical education program to connect the medical community with local resources and better link treatment and care;
The first-ever state Alzheimer’s Disease Registry to collect data on patients with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.
Through better education and outreach and a collection of data in the registry we’ll be able to address the pressing needs of patients with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers and develop more effective treatments, while deploying resources more effectively.
The West Virginia Cable Telecommunications Association and its member companies are sponsoring the launch of AORP to intensify the education and outreach effort aimed at physicians and other healthcare providers.
